What is Moderate Electric Field (MEF) heating?

MEF is one of the ‘greenest’ ways electrical energy can be used in food processing. This arises from direct, simple energy application, volumetric heating, tremendously reduced heating times all minimizing energy loss opportunities and providing an outstanding alternative to conventional heating.

MEF is the use of electric fields at levels ranging from about 1 to 1000 V/cm of arbitrary frequencies (50 - 25,000 Hz) and waveforms with or without the heating effect. It involves a simpler more direct application of electrical current (i.e. no capacitors, pulse forming networks etc.) which is in the form of AC (vs DC in PEF).

Benefits of MEF

Reduce energy

Reduce water consumption

Allow recycling of by-products through bio-refinery

Ensure a safe and high-quality product
